What problem are we trying to solve?

Public indoor environments such as malls, airports, and sports arenas are in a blind spot today. GPS satellite signals cannot penetrate their walls and currently deployed location solutions such as cell triangulation and outdoor Wi-Fi databases have 50-100+ meter error rates that limit their effectiveness.  We focus on providing accurate positioning for smartphones and other portable devices in the world’s major indoor spaces.

Why is it important to enable accurate indoor positioning?

Indoor positioning represents a significant market opportunity within location services with analysts at ABI Research and IDTechEx estimating a $2.5-5 billion addressable market over the next 5-10 years.

U.S. consumers spend over $750 billion and 600 billion minutes per year in the nation’s largest shopping malls alone. With over 50% of purchase decisions occurring in-store, location information can generate significant value in aiding shopper navigation and enabling targeted marketing.

Additional use cases include: Finding people (e.g., lost children, first responder, friend meet-ups); Crowd and workforce footfall analysis; Automated check-in / check-out on services such as Foursquare, Facebook Places, and Google Places.

How does the Lighthouse Signal Systems technology work?

We initially develop a database of “fingerprints” of wireless signals throughout any venue that is part of our system. This involves walking around the location and scanning wireless signal data.

We use a combination of radio frequency and sensor data from a user’s phone to determine location within a venue by comparing against our fingerprint database.

What are the distinguishing features of our technology?

Indoor positioning solutions have existed for many years. Our approach is unique in combining micro-positioning accuracy and massive scalability:

  • Significantly more accurate than existing technologies
    1. - Positions smartphone within 5-7 meters, enabling store-level accuracy
      - Identifies user floor location
      - Combines wireless data and inertial navigation information
  • Massively scalable
    1. - No need for proprietary networks (e.g., venue does not need its own WiFi network; end users do not need to log into a WiFi network)
      - No need for beacons or other new equipment
      - Up to 20X faster to develop “fingerprint database” for an indoor location than existing approaches (e.g., typical mid-sized mall requires less than 1 day for 1 non-engineer)

We are applying the massive scalability of our solution to develop an nation-wide open indoor positioning service covering major public spaces that is available to all app developers via an open API.  Our business model is focused on sharing in the value that indoor micro-location generates for developers.

This video demonstrates our ability to differentiate floors and to provide micro-location within stores in addition to the major hallways and open spaces in a mall. Traditional location technologies and recent indoor solutions typically fail to provide accurate location inside of stores and have difficulty differentiating between floors
